lemon-esque-ish

Come summers and all things cool appeal. Somehow lemons are close to me more than ever! And chartreuse is fast becoming my favourite. One of the new pieces that has just arrived has a gorgeous-gorgeous green stone...

CR 89

Love how the simple link and the beautiful green (not enhanced digitally) make the piece look so stylish. By the way the ends are now secured by a similar green satin ribbon.

Thinking of lemons....... one song surely spring to my mind... the ever classic Lemon Tree. Also, a few weeks back I was introduced to Lemon Jelly..an old Brit electronic duo who have made some amazing music!

CN 32

This one is an old design. I got bored of the last piece I made of this one. So to add a twist, instead of the drops below I suspended a peridot chain (also green!) from the jumpring of one earring and ended it at the other. And voila! a chain cum a pair of earrings was ready. Looked tangilicious...

Have a flavourful and zesty week!

new stuff

My new collection is almost ready... and getting ready as per my hearts content and satisfaction this time! Shall write and reveal more about it very soon.

CR 86

I have been enjoying a lot lately ...funning and friending. An old design of mine in a new look just arrived and is all black.. I fell for it completely! During the blackening process, some random marks appeared on it. And thats what excited me the most! (visible on the left side of the image) These silverish marks add so much character and individuality... just love them!

Also, a crazy-fun friend of mine had come to stay with us for the last weekend. She introduced me to this very infectious french song... I love Dance

See if you get infected...

look who has come...

... a romantic!

This gorgeous girl goes by the name Divya. She is not only beautiful but also very talented! Armed with an experience of about 7 years in design, this lass has not created less then wonders in the name of jewellery. I asked her to do the honor of inaugurating my guest bloggers list because I simply adore here style and language. This is what she wrote...

I am Divya, an accessory designer by profession with a die-hard romantic essence and the lines that follow, reflect a bit of both. I find romance everywhere… in literature, in music, in food and add it in every piece of jewellery I create. I am curious to know who will wear it, excited to see the gleam in her eyes and the sheer joy of owning something that makes her feel beautiful.

Every girl has a favorite piece of jewellery which she treasures, for me its an ordinary tiny diamond ring that I wear on my most important finger. We women are romantics! Even those who claim they are not ;)

When Dipika asked me to write a little something for her blog, I thought of sharing two beautiful stories, where the feeling behind the jewellery became of more importance than the jewellery itself. And its for all those guys out there to know that it is not the ‘material’ that we care about, it is the thought that counts so much more…

Story 1:

This one is about a bourgeois couple in love for last 25 odd yrs. A classic case of a guy completely smitten by his lady love, who wants to emote every expression of love that exists, neutralized by a woman who is introvert and shy and her best expression of love towards him lies in a beautiful smile and by the way she stands besides him. The man changed by the undiluted love of a woman who accepted his flaws in the same vein as his affection. He transformed, from the loud ignorant man who enjoyed a drink too often with his friends, to a man who valued his family…his lovely wife and children.

Her unflinching support through the difficult times when success eluded him, made him realize that perhaps love is not just about making yourself heard, perhaps stronger when unsaid. So after some difficult times had passed and he regained what had set him back, he wanted to do something special for her.

On a usual Sunday evening, after their cup of chai together, he took her out to the bazaar, where they usually went to have her favourite panipuri. As he parked his scooter, he took her by surprise by taking her to a jeweller’s store. Her gold kadas (thick/wide bangles) were ready. He handed them over to her saying, ‘I can never thank you enough for what you have done for me, for all those sacrifices you have made silently. You sold off your gold kadas so that I could pay off my debts, that day was very painful for me. I had resolved then, that the day I had enough, I would buy them back for you’. A teardrop was shimmering on the sides of her eyes, when she heard this, which meant – I will love you forever. She was too shy to say it. He understood... and said ‘I love you too.

Those kadas are still my moms most precious gift.

Story 2:

It was their 50th wedding anniversary. They had a huge gathering at their royal mansion in a posh locality in the city of Mumbai. He had made it big after all these years and she stood by him from rags to riches, strong, supportive and confident in him. She looked beautiful, he thought, even though years had wrinkled her face but her eyes still had the same glint when they had first met. Maybe it was her soul that rendered the radiance. He looked at her and then at the mansion, and thanked god for all that he had achieved, material and spiritual.

After cutting the anniversary cake, he took her inside and showed her two boxes. She opened the first box. A note in it read - ‘You were with me when I could give you just this’. The box had a ‘fake diamonds’ necklace made with ordinary metal that he had gifted her on their first anniversary. It was all he could afford to buy then. He handed her the second box. It had the same necklace, but this one had real diamonds set in gold. And the note read - ‘You have been a wonderful companion. And have been my support in the years I was struggling. Without you I wouldn’t have been what I am. This is a small token of my love and thanks’. She knew she could afford all the diamonds in the world at that time. Yet what made that diamond strand extra precious to her was the thought and love behind it. She looked at him with the same twinkle in her eyes – just like the diamonds he had just gifted her… and smiled.

And yes, this is a true story too… of one of my clients’. I designed and made that diamond necklace for his wife and in the process got to know his plan and her reaction to it.

I believe every one of us has a story to tell, about the most prized jewellery piece that is ever so close to our heart. So when you are back home, ask your friend, mom, grandma.. which is that piece of jewellery that is closest to her heart? More often then not, her most cherished piece would be the one for a reason that is beyond its material cost or physical beauty.

-Divya Batra.

A few things about her...

CN 28 the Coyote design Divya adores

This aquarian loves reading Gulzar and Harivanshrai Bachchan. Her favourite song is 'aapki aankhon mein kuch' from the hindi movie Ghar. Apart from being a very sweet singer she secretly yearns to play the guitar like a pro while singing. She admires CN 32, CN 74 and CN 76 and CN 28 from the Coyote designs (75% jaali designs by the way!). Prefers movies over clothes and food over flowers! A tub of Bavarian chocolate ice cream is her idea of indulgence. And her favourite word is bosa... which means a light kiss!

Muah!

turq sweet home...

45 inch mirror table top

Kanika of anek designs saw my old nests pictures a few days back on my FB account. She asked if she could do a post on it on her blog. And I immediately agreed! But only after loving the idea of doing the same on my blog...

coffee corner with my favourite gold frame

So here I am... bouncing off on her idea... and posting a pictures of my old home.  I am emotionally attached to this place... and I guess I will be forever. It was this house that I moved into, when I first landed in Mumbai three and a half years back to make it my new home.

hall

It was a mid December evening when my flight landed in Mumbai. And my very-few-days old husband dropped me here and went off to collect his bags and books from his old place. And there I was! Standing in an empty house with only tubes, fans, fittings in the bath and a thin film of dust on everything one could lay eyes on!

pee place

I scrubbed and clean every corner of the hall so that we could have a clean place to sleep that night. Over the next few months we gathered a few required things to fill it up and added the much loved accent colour to the drab walls.

the wall

By the way my husband painted this magical wall. He started one morning. Sketched. And before lunch it was morphed! He infused life in it! He is an amazing artist... See his work here.

We stayed in this house from 2007 to 2009. When we moved a lot of my friends asked, 'What did you do to the wall?' They were sincerely worried! My aesthetics have changed a lot since then. My wish list for my dream home is very different and very long too  :D

Do you have a dream home? ...or a wish list for it?

paisa! paisa! paisa!

A glimpse of my up coming collection. All around coins.. Indian 5re coins.. Money/coins always excite me. Who doesn't get worked up about it?
CY 61 - coin brooch with blue chalcedony and coral

Completely adore it. The stone is half set and half stuck on the sikka. It's actually at an angle, the base is lower than the coin and the tip higher. Ring and neckpiece will follow soon.

By the way! This collection will be called 'Paanch Rupaiyya'. All the coins used in this one are usable and not damaged at all.

Let me know what excites you?

chiquita

I forgot to add this work to my 'nid works' post. I made it during the jewellery module. More like jewellery with experimental material...

braiding bands linked with silver rings

It took me almost two whole months, to make a choker neckpiece and a pair of 3d (tubular) earrings with this technique. Killingly tedious...! to first make the jump rings out of thin silver wire and then plug them onto two bands at a time, plus making sure the bands don't get crushed or too tight anywhere.

It was finally displayed at India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) '2004 and wholly appreciated.

Oh! I named it 'Chiquita'.

industrial design.... exploring on

I started the other way around. Put the final products in the 1st post, trials in the 2nd and the ones I love the most... explorations and experiments... for this one!

As soon as I got my brief, I reached Amrapali's export factory called 'Rajiv Arora'. Later they opened up another factory right besides the export one and its called 'Amrapali'. This one is for the local market's production. But nothing beats the charm of 'Rajiv Arora' factory!

the 'un-holed' ball

Although I had worked briefly with silver and other metals before then, at the institute, this was completely new! There were 3 girls in the design department. They kept on telling me things... possibilities and the impossibles. The first thing thrown at me was... You cant make complete ball of silver! It may burst... so you have to puncture it and the go about your work. Now that was a challenge for me... and the result was the piece in the picture above. Holes were made later and stones were set into it. But there was an 'un-holed' ball 1st!

the jaali ball

Next statement was... You can never set stones before the soldering! It always has to be after. This one required some thinking and some bit of researching about properties of various stones. The result was a jaali ball with a stone inside it (picture above).

golf-ish ball

As I started playing with stones and silver, I was told... To set 2mm stones (in flush setting) the silver sheet has to be of at least 21-22 gauge. No less will do. The tone of 2 gurls in particular was challenging in an unfathomable way or so I thought. For the rest of it I'll say, I always have been the questioning kinds. I feel very strongly that... every-bloody-problem has a loophole! I explored stamping around the same time. And the result (answer) was 23 gauge silver sheet with 2mm stones in flush setting (with stamps behind the stones)... This idea is brilliantly relevant today! thanks to the soaring silver prices. Its 51.50/- INR per gram as I type.
silver coin with copper stamps (and the black marks)

My first brush with stamping (picture above). They dint poke me after that or maybe I was too excited about newness around to notice. I felt like a little girl (with a sweet tooth... that I really have!) left alone in a candy store...

Tried to make the above piece look as if the stone was tearing up on to the surface. Failed miserably at that! But I created this crushed foil like texture with my own hands and soldered it on to another thin flat sheet for strength. So no casting or repousse was employed.

pendant - settings etc.

double sided pendant - exploring curves

ring - gold plated copper inlayed (not really)/ tricked in to silver

double finger ring

Fished out this stone during a market visit that time. Freaked out at the brightness of pink. Many of these were made by me... not all the way to the end but a lot of processes. I fell in love with these pieces so much that I offered them to keep my remuneration and let me take these pieces back. They took it. And a 'Happy Ending' it was...

industrial training.... ideas galore

Photo frames.... last post ended with it and this one begins with it. By now, my greed to learn, discover, explore and execute was at its peak!

3 inches high photo frame with silver and copper stamps

Stamping is a technique used in precious and non-precious metals to save time, energy and the metal. Difficult to solder it properly though! Its a kind of die cutting. I was trying to mix copper and brass with silver, using this time saver. Copper and silver frame follows below. Understood their melting points and differences. Brass was melting so fast it almost got disfigured!

Don't miss the black-ish marks inside the ashtray! It was a trouble I faced throughout. Later, after much R&C (reading - checking) I figured out the reason. Different kinds of impurities that get missed while purifying silver results in different coloured marks... red-ish, green-ish and black-ish.

Let me not bore you! The above piece triggered off another product idea...

2 3/4inches long photo frame in silver with copper stamps

condiment dish from 'droplets' series has a similar black mark issue around the stone caps

3 inches wide textured photo frame in silver with brass stamps and moonstone

Amrapali factory has a treasure of handmade beads in silver and copper. I was given a full day to play with them! I danced around in a tribal madness, had my fun and made a few things too...

silver picke jar + lid + spoon set with copper beads

The pickle jar turned out adorable! Just about 3 and 1/2 inches in diameter. A 2 day old silver turning set up provided the idea. Added a coiled copper wire on the spoon for a similar language.

3 inches long silver fruit picks with silver and copper beads

a few styles of copper + silver beads

silver beads linked - 3 1/2inches

with colored round beads

The piece above came to life as I added color beads. Thought of making a coaster out of it. But the beads disagreed with my idea. It had a life of its own! I have a feeling, this idea can be made into a fabulous silver stole... Given a chance (loads of silver beads and money too!) I'd love to take it forward.

I was playing around with it and yet another idea struck...

silver beads' bracelet

This was the last product I made there. By the way... I did design and make at least, a good 7-8 pieces more that I dint bother clicking/documenting! "These are not very important! I can always make them again" ...that was the kind of high I was on!

Let me know how you like the pieces so far. Shall come back with more! Wondering what remains when the last product picture is right above...?

The best pieces still crave a debut...
Happy flirting!
